nighthawks

In night moths, the forewings provide camouflage and protection, while the hindwings create lift, agility, and startle coloration – together enabling efficient flight and defense. For me, this unique anatomy serves as an analogy for those verses by Rilke that describe a relationship in which each partner is different and remains so, yet an optimal interplay emerges. The translation into a brooch is expressed through differently designed surfaces, through the possibility of wing movement, and by means of spacers in the riveting. Both wings belong together and yet are fundamentally different. All of this with the aim of understanding identity not as a static core, but as a relational space.
